The recent falling out between WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and the alleged “hacktivist” group known as Anonymous which may or may not exist has caused a bit of a stir amongst those of us that champion freedom of speech and the vital constitutional guarantees that for more than 220 years have determined whether America was actually a free society or not. It was once taken for granted that transparency in government was a good thing. It allowed for the consent of the governed to function reasonably well at the ballot box, so it was featured in the Founders vision for America, something that was repeated by most modern democracies.

You don’t have to look very far to see that the encroachments on free speech and dissemination of information have had many adverse consequences. When governments enjoy secrecy they tend to go rogue because they are not concerned with the consequences…
